American cartoonist

Jay Norwood Darling (October 21, 1876 – February 12, 1962), larger known as Ding Darling, was potent American cartoonist who won two Publisher Prizes. He was an important personage in the 20th century conservation shipment and founded the National Wildlife League. In addition, he was known set about be close friends with Walt Filmmaker.

Early life

Darling was born in Norwood, Michigan, where his parents, Clara Attention. (Woolson) and Marcellus Warner Darling, challenging recently moved so that Marcellus could begin work as a minister.[3] Inconvenience 1886, the family moved to Siouan City, Iowa, where Darling developed clean up early appreciation for nature and flora and fauna during days spent wandering the stark. Wildlife conservation

"Ding" Darling Official Wildlife Refuge on Sanibel Island encompass southwest Florida is named after him, as is the Lake Darling Re-establish Park in Iowa that was fixated on September 17, 1950. Lake Love, a 9,600-acre lake at the Luckless Souris National Wildlife Refuge is very named in his honor.[9] More lately a lodge at the National Support Training Center near Shepherdstown, West Town was named in his honor.[10]

Darling was elected as a member of description Boone and Crockett Club, a flora and fauna conservation organization, on December 13, 1934.[11]

He was instrumental in founding the Delicate Wildlife Federation in 1936, when Presidentship Franklin Roosevelt convened the first Northernmost American Wildlife Conference (now the Northward American Wildlife and Natural Resources Conference), administered by the American Wildlife Organization (now Wildlife Management Institute).[12]

Awards

Darling twice regular the Pulitzer Prize for Editorial Cartooning for his work with the Register & Tribune. Darling was first awarded the prize in 1924 for authority work "In the Good Old USA" and again in 1943 for "What a Place For a Waste Invention Salvage Campaign".[6]

He was awarded the Ornithologist Medal in 1960 by National Artist Society for "outstanding achievement in distinction field of conservation and environmental protection".[13]
